Mark Schubert, the US national team swimming coach, has taken two months off from his position while the National Convention of USA Swimming is on in Dallas, Texas, AFP reported. Outgoing federation president Jim Wood will fill in the position in the interim, according to USA Swimming. USA Swimming also announced that Michael Lawrence, chair of USA Swimming's Olympic International Operations Committee, will assume an enhanced leadership role with the national team division.

Recently there have been allegations of sexual abuse of young swimmers involving some coaches. While one suspects this as the reason for Schubert's paid leave as investigations are on, at the same time there has been no indication from anywhere linking Schubert to the scandal.

Schubert has been associated with USA Swimming since 1984. He became the national team coach after the Athens Olympics in 2004.

irresponsible!!! schubert's leave of absence should not even be mentioned on the same page as the sex abuse issue. as others pick up on this post, they will likely jump to conclusions that could cause serious damage to coach schubert's reputation. please don't spread this ugly rumor.

Swimmer

Can everyone please stop the Schubert worship? He is a human being. His coaching accomplishments are in the books. We all know he's a great coach; that is not even under question. Don't let his coaching ability or anyone else's excuse other behaviors. USA Swimming is making an honest effort to clean up the sport from the bottom to the top and back again. Let the evidence come out, or not, and let the chips fall where they may.

One thing is for sure. This decision was serious and should not be treated lightly or as a mistake out of hand, just because someone coaches really well.

For the record, the writer states there is no evidence linking Schubert to the abuse cases. It is true that many are speculating. MANY are speculating. This is, therefore, an accurate statement.

Eyes wide open and awaiting more information
