Saturday was a good day for presidential candidate Mitt Romney. Immediately after CPAC organizers announced that the former Massachusetts governor won the conference straw poll, the state GOP chair said he had also clinched the lead in Maine's caucuses.

With 84 percent of precincts reporting, Romney won 39.2 percent of the vote. Rep. Ron Paul came in second place with 35.7 percent and Rick Santorum placed third with 17.7. Newt Gingrich garnered 6.2 percent of the vote.

The week-long Maine caucuses ended Saturday. Although there were no reliable polls to support it, the race for first place appeared to be a competition between Romney and Paul.

Romney, the front-runner in the race, has won the most primaries and caucuses so far and has amassed 112 delegates. Paul skipped the Conservative Political Action Conference this year to focus on campaigning in Maine. The Texan libertarian had one the CPAC straw poll the previous two years and has collected 9 delegates so far.
