Econet to Release 20,000 Lines per Week to Connect Mobile Users |

JOHANESBURG (IBTimes.com) - A programme to release 20,000+ mobile connections each week has beenstarted by Econet, a wireless operator in Zimbabwe, and is to run forthe foreseeable future.
The operator, which has released more than 60,000 lines in the pastthree weeks, intends to release around 20,000 lines each week, throughits nationwide shops and through about 30 dealers.
According to Econet, there will be enough lines released during thenext few months to meet demand and urged potential customers not to buylines at black market prices, or spend hours waiting in queues outsideits shops.
It claimed there are around 100,000 people in Zimbabwe witha mobile phone but no SIM card and confirmed it is aiming to connectthese users within the next few weeks.
Econet said it is attempting to obtain extra foreign currency in orderto complete further network expansion, having almost finished anexpansion programme to increase capacity from 500,000 to 800,000, at acost of USD20m.
It plans to continue releasing lines past the 300,000it promised, over the next few weeks.
