NAIROBI (IBTimes.com) - Kenya has successfully tested the radio frequency identification (RFID) technology that keeps passengers on aircraft informed of the whereabouts of their luggage.
The technology was tested at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) by the Transportation Security Administration of the US.
RFID is a technology incorporated into a silicon chip, which emits a radio signal that associates a user-defined serial number with a bag.
The technology is expected to reduce costs associated with airport baggage theft and mishandling. The International Air Transport Authority (IATA) estimates that the airline industry loses an estimated $750 million annually in compensation claims.
The RFID tag will replace the current barcode tags that are prone to damage, which result in baggage being misplaced.
"The RFID technology is more efficient than barcodes. It enables bags to be sorted and loaded on aircraft faster," said Bisignani.
