Nairobi (IBTimes.com) - Traders in Kenyan major cities and towns are set to close down their shops today to protest the introduction of Electronic Tax Registers.
They also plan to march to the Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) offices to demonstrate their anger at the taxman's decision. The protests are expected to last the whole day.
Mr Sudhir Shah, the United Business Association co-ordinator for Mombasa, said they were dismayed that KRA was summoning and harassing traders yet they still had a case pending in court.
He said: "The case has not been determined and we hoped that KRA would wait for its outcome."
According to him, the authority had no legal powers to summon business people. "They have to respect the law and abide by it just like everyone else."
Businessmen lodged a case on March 9 and it was yet to be heard and determined. They have also complained that they were being penalised yet hawkers were left free."We want fairness in the whole proposes," said Mr Shah.
But hawkers urged the Government to remain firm and refuse to be dictated to by the traders.Ms Christine Atieno, a hawker, said business people operate in designated areas and it was the Government's job to ensure that they paid taxes as required.
