Nairobi (IBTimes.com) - Makerere University is constructing what will become the biggest information and communication technology (ICT) training facility in Africa. The sh20b project under the Faculty of Computing and Information Technology will have 6,000 square metres of lecture
The faculty dean Dr. Venansius Baryamureeba said the ultra modern complex being built by COMPLANT, will seat 6,000 students at a go. The actual construction will cost sh13b while equipment and furnishing will take sh6b. The Royal Kingdom of Norway has donated about sh3.6b.
The six-storey building will comprise six spacious lecture rooms each with a capacity of 600 students and six computer laboratories to seat 1,000 students each. The laboratories will be used by all university students, making Makerere's dreams of all its graduates being computer literate, a reality.
The vice-chancellor Prof.Livingstone Luboobi said the new building aims at providing
the necessary infrastructure for the largest centre of excellence in ICT training, research and professional services in Africa.
"In addition to being a home of excellence in Africa, the building will be used to train all Makerere University students and staff in ICT skills," he said.
Luboobi said the building would also be used as a national training facility, especially during holidays, for students from different schools and higher institutions of learning.
